Burning timber helps fight burning timber

Over the last couple months we have been working on the old Japanese technique of burning timber. As well as creating an eye catching look, there are many benefits to charring the timber. It forms a carbon layer on the exterior of the boards that protects the lumber inside which means its practically maintenance free with a life span of more than 80 years! It is shown to work excellently against rot and termites as well increased fire resistance (ironically).

Having a black facade can have an obvious impact on the heat of the house, that's why it has to be done correctly. Like most facades, we would recommend this application in a rainscreen system, with a big enough cavity to deal with the excess heat caused.

Recently we have been distributing plenty of charred shiplap samples. If this is something you are interested in then please get in contact with us. Check out this house in the article below to get an idea of what your charred timber project could look like.
